As the Midwest grapples with the knock-on effects of an oil refinery outage, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has intervened to ease pressure on fuel supplies. Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana will benefit from an issued fuel waiver to stabilize gas prices and ensure a steady supply. The decision came after Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer proactively contacted the EPA, highlighting the urgency to act due to the outage, ongoing hurricane season, and the peak of summer travel.

The waiver, in response to the shutdown of ExxonMobil's Joliet, Illinois refinery due to severe weather, will remain in effect until Aug. 20. Gov. Whitmer, in a move to rapidly counter potential supply disruptions, reportedly said as per the Office of the Governor, "The temporary waiver granted by the EPA will help us keep fuel prices stable, ensuring Michiganders can fuel their cars or heat their homes and businesses at a predictable rate." This was part of a statement she issued emphasizing the necessity of collaborative efforts to stabilize costs for Michigan residents.

According to CBS News Detroit, an official press release stated the EPA and the Department of Energy assessed the situation and concluded that the waiver was "consistent with the public interest". Beyond this immediate action, the Michigan Public Service Commission Chair, Dan Scripps, underscored the importance of preparedness. "It's a prudent step, and it means that we are better prepared for any challenges that we may face as we get into to the next couple of, of weeks and months," Scripps said, as per CBS News Detroit.
