Tensions are high in Knox County following a hit-and-run incident that occurred on the first day of school, leaving a young student critically injured while she awaited her school bus. A statement obtained by WATE confirms that the Knox County Sheriff's Office Traffic Unit responded to the scene at the intersection of Thornton and Hughlan Drive in the Farragut area at around 7:30 a.m.
A bystander discovered the juvenile female victim on the ground approximately when the school bus arrived, as per a statement obtained by WEAU. She was promptly taken to The University of Tennessee Medical Center, where she was reported to be in "critical but stable condition," according to later updates provided by the Knox County Schools Communications Director, Kimberly Glenn.
Knox County Schools Superintendent Dr. Jon Rysewyk reflected the community's concern. In a statement obtained by WVLT, he said, "Our thoughts and prayers are with this student and her family. We can't emphasize enough how important it is that drivers take care in the early morning and afternoon when students are walking to and from bus stops." Furthermore, he called on the community to assist in ensuring the safety of students during their commutes.
The Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the incident but has yet provided limited information about the vehicle involved. They are requesting that anyone with information or who may have captured relevant footage on their security cameras to reach out at 865-215-2243. Tipsters have the option to remain anonymous, as highlighted in the statements. The emphasis on community vigilance and the sharing of any possible leads underscores the seriousness with which local authorities are handling the case.
This incident has undeniably cast a shadow over what should have been an auspicious start to the academic year. Rysewyk also utilized the moment to issue a broader call to action. "I want to call on the entire community to aid us this year in keeping students safe during their commute to and from school," he told WEAU. In light of the tragedy that unfolded, the road to recovery, both for the victim and the community's sense of security, seems to be a challenging one.
