Madisonville, Tennessee was the site of a fatal officer-involved shooting at the Monroe County Justice Center, as reported by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI). The incident occurred early Friday morning just after 8 a.m., when a 49-year-old man, identified as David Resmondo, fired shots in the parking lot before approaching and entering the building.
According to WATE, Resmondo was armed with a Ruger Mini-14 .223 caliber rifle and had begun shooting outside in the parking lot and at the building's front door. A deputy confronted Resmondo soon after he entered the Justice Center and subsequently shot him. Resmondo was taken to a local hospital by Monroe County EMS where he later died from his injuries.
The TBI's ongoing investigation seeks to determine the events that led up to the shooting. In the aftermath of the incident, the surrounding area, including a stretch of Highway 68 near the justice center, was cordoned off as additional law enforcement agencies responded. The Blount County Sheriff's Office sent their K-9 unit and the Knox County Sheriff’s Office dispatched their Bomb Squad and aviation teams to assist, as stated in WBIR. No explosives were found at the scene.
Officers and citizens present during the incident remained unharmed. Monroe County Sheriff Tommy Jones expressed relief and gratitude, stating, "I am very thankful that the citizens, deputies, and staff that were on the premises were not injured," in a statement obtained by WATE. He added, "I ask that the community remember all of the first responders, involved deputies, as well as Mr. Resmondo’s family in their prayers. I am proud of my deputies for placing themselves between the shooter and occupants of the justice center, ending a threat before it evolved into a mass casualty situation."
The identity of the deputy involved in the shooting has not been released, and the TBI has not immediately disclosed a possible motive for Resmondo's actions, as mentioned in an article from AP News. The district attorney general will review the findings of TBI's investigation once concluded.
