A brush fire in Castaic on Friday ravaged three trailers and scorched 3 acres of land before firefighters were able to get the situation under control. According to a report by KTLA, the fire was reported shortly before 1 p.m at Tapia Canyon and Charlie Canyon roads. The blaze, which responders named the Copco Fire, is believed to have originated in a junkyard and spread to the vegetation nearby.
The response from firefighters was swift, with units dispatched around 12:51 p.m. and arriving on the scene by 1:06 p.m., said Luis Garcia, widely spread out which was a spokesman for the Fire Department, in a statement obtained by Signal SCV. Despite the ferocity of the flames that fully engulfed the trailers, Garcia also noted that no structures were threatened. The crews were able to contain the fire to an area holding at about 3 acres.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, with an inverted lithium battery being considered as a potential culprit as Craig Little, a spokesman for the Fire Department, told Signal SCV. He also confirmed that there was one minor injury among the fire personnel, who subsequently was transported to a hospital nearby.
The incident unfolded while an alert was in place after the National Weather Service issued a fire weather warning for the Santa Clarita Valley on Friday morning. High temperatures, reaching near or above the triple digits, were expected to complicate firefighting efforts. The critical conditions of the weather exacerbated the difficulties, a minor injury sustained by just one of the firefighters, according to Little.
