
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has made headlines with the arrests of five individuals previously employed in law enforcement positions, stemming from an aggravated assault on an inmate which took place in Floyd County Jail. The individuals charged include former Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) officers, a GDC investigator, and a former Floyd County deputy, all of whom now face accusations related to the incident that came to light on June 5, when the Floyd County Sheriff's Office requested the GBI's assistance in the investigation, according to an official announcement made by the GBI.
According to the press release, the accused are Josha Riddle, 32, Billy Lingerfelt, 63, Donna Pettyjohn, 56, Hannah Rittweger, 32, and Logan Nelson, 24, whose charges range from Aggravated Assault to Violation of Oath of Office, and in some cases, Conspiracy to Commit Battery, these individuals currently detained at the Floyd County Jail await further legal proceedings. Riddle and Lingerfelt face direct charges for their involvement in the actual assault and the associated terroristic threats, whereas Pettyjohn and Rittweger have been charged with conspiracy related to the attack and are accused of making false statements, with Nelson's role being identified as a party to the various crimes that occurred.
The GBI emphasizes that the investigation is still active, encouraging those with pertinent information to come forward and contribute their accounts or evidence, such engagement can be made via the Floyd County Sheriff's Office at 706-291-4111 or the GBI regional investigative office at 706-624-1424; moreover, tips can be reported anonymously through calling 1-800-597-TIPS (8477), submitting online, or through the 'See Something, Send Something' mobile application.
Once completed, the case file will be handed over to the Floyd County District Attorney's Office, which will be responsible for prosecuting the case; this signifies systemic processes unfolding, ensuring that not only is justice sought for the victim of the alleged aggravated assault but that accountability is upheld within the confines of the institutions pledged to protect and serve, even as the fabric of trust between the public and those sworn to uphold the law faces yet another testing challenge.
