Fort Collins Police are currently investigating a serious collision that occurred yesterday at the intersection of West Prospect Road and South Shields Street. The accident, which involved a 2021 GMC Sierra and an electric scooter, happened at approximately 8:38 P.M. According to a press release on the city's official website, the scooter rider, an adult female, suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.
The initial findings of the investigation suggest that the GMC, carrying two adults, was making a left-hand turn from South Shields Street when it struck the scooter. The rider was in the east side crosswalk, traveling southbound. The police are now trying to determine who had the right of way at the time of the collision. "The circumstances and factors that led up to this crash are still under investigation," said Sergeant David Lindsay, who is overseeing the Fort Collins Police CRASH Team as per the City of Fort Collins.
The aftermath of the crash prompted a closure of the intersection for approximately 6 ½ hours as the Collision Reconstruction and Scene Handling (CRASH) Team processed the scene. The sergeant urged all road users to follow the traffic laws and signals closely, especially as the evenings grow darker and visibility decreases. He reminded that vigilance on the road is crucial for safety.
Fort Collins authorities are reaching out to the public for any additional information relating to the incident. Individuals who witnessed the incident or have relevant details but have not yet spoken to the police are encouraged to contact Corporal Shane Hasebroock at (970) 221 6540. The ongoing investigation highlights the precarious balance between the burgeoning popularity of electric scooters and the need for heightened awareness and safety measures on shared roadways.
