The Single-A Fredericksburg Nationals witnessed history when their prospect Travis Sykora delivered an impressive performance on the mound. During an August 9 game, the young pitcher threw six perfect innings against the Carolina Mudcats in the Carolina League, setting the stage for the franchise's maiden nine-inning no-hitter. Sykora's stint included the felling of 10 batters, contributing to a 7-1 victory for FredNats, according to KXAN.
Not new to exemplary outings, Sykora has been on a roll with 18 strikeouts in his last 11 innings pitched, boasting a minuscule ERA of 2.42 and keeping opponents' average to .151. He holds a record of 3-3, with 96 strikeouts in 63 1/3 innings so far this season, which culminates in a WHIP of 0.85 across 15 starts, KXAN reports. Despite these sterling efforts, the near-perfect game was lost in the eighth inning, when a walk by reliever Angel Roman dashed the perfect game prospects, and a combination of a walk, an error, and a wild pitch in the ninth inning conceded a run.
The Nationals' investment in Sykora seems to be paying off following their $2.6 million signing bonus that swayed him from his prior commitment to the Texas Longhorns. His ascent up the Nationals' prospect rankings to number 12 seems justified, alongside his recognition as the Carolina League’s pitcher of the week for July 28-Aug. 4, after he joined the FredNats on May 1, as per KXAN.
The combined no-hitter is a rare feat, marking the 32nd in the Minors this season, but of this bunch, only 16 have been complete nine-inning affairs, and even fewer – only 20 – have taken place outside of Complex League play, as detailed by MLB.com.
