Galveston, Texas, is set to develop its cruise industry footprint with the addition of a new cruise terminal. According to a KHOU report, the Port of Galveston will soon be graced by a fourth cruise terminal, as a current cargo warehouse at Pier 16 undergoes transformation, carrying a $151 million investment into the future of Texas cruising.
With construction in full swing, the new terminal will encompass 165,000 square feet of space and is expected to include a $55 million parking garage, for welcoming travelers designed conveniently. Slated for a November 2025 opening, the terminal will welcome the MSC Seascape as its resident ship, marking a significant enhancement to the local economy. “This beautiful new terminal will generate jobs and economic growth for the region, an exciting new cruise choice for our market, and growth opportunities for our port partners,” Rodger Rees, Galveston Wharves port director and CEO, highlighted, and Rick Sasson, MSC Cruises chairman, added “We are thrilled to work closely with the Galveston Wharves to shape the future of cruising in Texas,” as detailed by KHOU.
Moreover, the new facility, named Cruise Terminal 16, isn't just a boon for vacation-goers but also a significant push for Galveston's economy. Embarking on a project like this, the city is looking at creating 925 new jobs and pumping an additional $177 million annually into the local economy, according to details shared by Crew Center. The upgrades are part of MSC Cruises' broader expansion within the U.S., with the cruise line already securing its place in several other major ports.
Expanding upon MSC Cruises' existing global terminal presence, Galveston's addition will see it join an impressive roster including MSC Terminals AA/AAA at PortMiami, the Palacrociere Terminal in Genoa, Italy, and the sleek Helix Cruise Center in Barcelona, Spain. Galveston's emergence as a new homeport, as MSC Cruises chairman, Rick Sasson affirmed, puts the cruise line's commitment to growth and investment in the U.S. market on proud display. The new terminal promises a streamlined passenger experience, with amenities that cater to those embarking on the maritime journey aboard the MSC Seascape.
Expected to process over 2 million travelers by 2026, the Cruise Terminal 16 reflects a significant milestone for the Port of Galveston.
