The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is currently delving into the circumstances surrounding a shooting in Carrollton, which resulted in the death of one man and severe injury to a Carroll County deputy. The deputy is now in critical condition following the event, which unfolded during the execution of a search warrant tied to an ongoing investigation into child exploitation, as detailed in an official statement from the agency.
On the morning of August 20, at approximately 8:30 a.m., local deputies, accompanied by GBI agents, arrived at a residence on the 300 block of Don Rich Drive to enact a search warrant related to the investigation, the suspect, identified as Christopher Bly, age 40, opened the door to the deputies and subsequently retreated back into the house, at that point Bly discharged a handgun, resulting in his own death and causing serious harm to one of the deputies involved. The deputy was then airlifted to an Atlanta hospital, where they remain under critical care.
The incident's preliminary findings suggest Bly's wound was self-inflicted, according to the evidence collected at the scene. The GBI's Atlanta Regional Office has taken the lead in probing this incident further, while the Child Exploitation and Computer Crimes Unit, which initially secured the warrant, has confiscated several electronic devices from the home, which contained child sexual abuse material (CSAM).
As the investigation by the GBI is ongoing, specifics about the case are limited, however, the matter will be thoroughly examined before the case file is turned over to the Carroll County District Attorney's Office for review, the legal process yet to unfold will seek to clarify the sequence of events and the context underlining such a tragic outcome. In the meantime, the deputy's name has not been released, and further updates on their condition and the investigation's findings will be shared as they become available.
