An officer-involved shooting in Bartow County is currently under investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) following an incident that resulted in the death of 60-year-old Chris Cochran of Adairsville, GA. According to a press release made available through the GBI's official website, no officers sustained injuries during the confrontation.
The situation unfolded on August 18, around 4 p.m. when deputies from the Bartow County Sheriff’s Office were called upon to a residence on Wesley Mill Drive due to threats that Cochran made against his wife and a crisis intervention team. The GBI reports that the intervention team and Cochran's wife had to take refuge at a neighbor's house across the street. Deputies arrived to protect those who were threatened and were later forced to quickly relocate them as Cochran, armed with access to a large cache of rifles, retreated into his house, escalating tensions further.
Cochran’s aggression did not cease when he was inside his home; rather, he started to break his windows, issuing yet more threats of deadly force. This led to the deployment of a SWAT team with goals to evacuate the threatened individuals and to apprehend Cochran securely. What followed was an altercation where Cochran pointed a rifle out from a second-story window, levying threats at the SWAT officers, deputies, and witnesses outside.
The situation reached its critical juncture when a member of the SWAT team fatally shot Cochran after he threatened them with the gun. The Bartow County Coroner's Office declared Cochran dead at the scene, and his body is set to undergo an autopsy at the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office. The thorough and independent investigation vowed by the GBI aims to uncover all facets of this event, and once finalized, the dossier will be handed to the Cherokee Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for further proceedings.
