Yesterday, in a move to step-up skilled workforce training in the Lone Star State, Texas Governor Greg Abbott presided over the unveiling of the Texas A&M Coastal Bend Occupational Advanced Skills Training (COAST) program in Corpus Christi. The COAST initiative, grounded in a collaboration with Texas A&M, aims to arm Texans with the necessary tools to tackle the job market in high-demand sectors such as chemical and petroleum manufacturing, fabrication, maritime shipping, and research, as reported by the Governor's Office.
In the celebration, Governor Abbott expressed his gratitude towards the university and its Chancellor John Sharp for "helping Texas train a highly-skilled workforce and to provide employers with the best workforce in America." With a rapidly growing business landscape, Abbott pinpointed to the explosive growth anticipated in the Coastal Bend area, affirming businesses willingness to pay for skilled employees, as the Governor's Office detailed. The program encompasses training for skills ranging from cyber security to robotics and pneumatics, alongside the development of communication, collaboration, and leadership capabilities.
The COAST program complements the existing TEEX’s manufacturing training efforts, mirroring the Rio Grande Valley Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Hub in Brownsville. This educational initiative, led by the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX), is strategically positioned to feed into the state's flourishing economic sectors, potentially bolstering job opportunities for local Texans.
Among the dignitaries joining Governor Abbott were Texas A&M University System Chancellor John Sharp, Texas A&M University System Board of Regents Chairman Bill Mahomes, and various state and local officials, showing a united front in support of skills education. Abbott took this moment to broadcast Texas' position as the 'Best State for Business,' citing a superior business climate steered by a skilled workforce and reasonable regulations. He revealed that the state's economy ranks impressively as the eighth-largest globally, having clinched the Governor's Cup for 12 consecutive years, an accolade recognizing the state with the most economic development projects.
Earlier in April, Governor Abbott celebrated the groundbreaking of a similar advanced manufacturing training facility near the Port of Brownsville, designed to educate and usher Texans in the Rio Grande Valley into in-demand jobs. This facility is also a hub for manufacturing research and initiatives that could drive the state's industrial innovation forward. The recent Corpus Christi program underscores Texas' commitment to educational development in sectors significant for the state's future economic success and the livelihoods of its residents.
