A 24-year-old woman has been taken into custody by Grand Rapids authorities in a case involving the death of a 19-month-old girl and severe injuries to her twin brother. Brooklynne Davis was arrested this Monday after a disturbing scene was discovered at her residence on Eastern Avenue SE, where the deceased toddler was found by police last Thursday.

The Grand Rapids Police Department responded to a call made by Davis herself, reporting the death of her child. Upon arrival, officers found one child was already beyond help and another, her twin brother, in a life-threatening state, according to a report by WZZM13. The child was immediately transferred to a hospital and continues to fight to remain in critical condition. Signs of abuse and neglect were evident at the home, prompting Child Protective Services to also take an 8-year-old boy found at the home into their custody due to the conditions of the premises.

Davis is now facing charges of felony murder and first-degree child abuse. The Kent County Medical Examiner's office ruled the young girl's death a homicide. “This is one of the most horrific cases of child abuse I have ever seen," disclosed Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom, in a chilling reminder of the gravity of the case, recounted in FOX 17 News.

The investigation has been jointly managed by the Major Case Team and the Family Services Team of the Grand Rapids Police. While no details on the specific nature of the abuse have been publicly shared, the community and law enforcement have been visibly shaken by the events. "Neither the first responders, or the detectives who worked tirelessly for justice, will ever forget this child. We are praying for the recovery of her twin brother who also suffered unconscionable abuse,” Winstrom said, as noted by WOODTV. Davis is being held at the Kent County Correctional Facility and was scheduled for arraignment on Wednesday.
