A tragic incident unfolded Sunday evening in Montcalm County, leading to the death of a 60-year-old Greenville man. The Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office reports that at approximately 9:15 p.m., deputies were dispatched to South Greenville Road near Westover Drive, where a moped collided with a parked SUV. WOODTV relayed that the grievous crash involved a moped that had to maneuver onto the shoulder, subsequently rear-ending an unoccupied 2009 Chevy Traverse.
Further details reveal that a southbound vehicle was overtaking the moped at the time, pushing the rider to quickly move to the shoulder where the disabled SUV was located. According to UPNorthLive, "A witness reported that a southbound vehicle was overtaking the moped which caused the moped to move into the shoulder area of the roadway just prior to the crash." Tragically, the rider, who was not wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene. The southbound vehicle involved did not remain at the scene, and witnesses were unable to describe deputies.
The identity of the deceased man, a resident of Greenville, has not been disclosed pending notification of next of kin. The UPNorthLive report emphasized that there was no suspicion of alcohol being a contributing factor in this unfortunate accident. The road was temporarily closed off to allow for an investigation by the authorities but has since been reopened to traffic.
