The Memphis Sports Hall of Fame has named its class of 2024. Among the illustrious roster of inductees are notable figures like Grizzlies icon Zach Randolph and legendary sports broadcaster Jarvis Greer. The induction ceremony is pegged for October 16, at the Renasant Convention Center, a notable date for the city's sports community. According to Action News 5, Greer, after more than 43 years in sports journalism, retired at the end of 2022, making this recognition a capstone to his career.
Tickets for the induction event, which provides attendees with ceremony seating, food, drinks, and the chance to meet the honorees, come at $75 for an individual or $750 for a table hosting ten people. The 2024 class boasts varied talents, including the late NFL Defensive End Reggie White and college swim coach Dick Fadgen, reported Geoff Calkins Show on 929 ESPN. Kevin Kane, president and CEO of Memphis Tourism, emphasized the inductees' role as inspirational figures in a statement obtained by Audacy.
The 2024 group was curated by an 18-member advisory committee, spanning award-winning sports journalists to professional and amateur sports industry executives. In it, Randolph is celebrated for helping the Grizzlies make their inaugural Western Conference Finals appearance, and Greer is acknowledged for his Emmy-winning sports broadcasting career. "The 2024 class of honorees have served as role models and inspired the Memphis sports community, and their legacies will forever be honored as members of the Memphis Sports Hall of Fame," Kane noted in a press release cited by the Commercial Appeal.
Also joining the ranks are other esteemed athletes such as Andre Turner, a Memphis basketball hero, and United States Racquetball Association Hall of Famer Andy Roberts. Special recognition is also given posthumously to pioneers like the Melrose basketball legend Bobby "Bingo" Smith and football coach Jim Heinz, indicating the ceremony will also serve a dual function of a heartfelt memorial.
