The Ma & Pa Trail in Harford County, Maryland, has seen a significant uptick in surveillance following the tragic murder of Rachel Morin, a local mother of five. With a staggering 104 cameras now installed along a two-mile stretch of the trail, local residents are expressing relief and a renewed sense of security. "To see that people did not feel comfortable using it, even during the daytime, even with other people walking the trail with them, was very discouraging," Deanna Harkins stated, as per WMAR-2 News, adding that more people have been frequenting the trail since the cameras' installation.

Powered by a one-million-dollar investment, the system required contractors to implement advancements where there previously were none like power and fiber optics in a wooded area; Harford County Executive Robert Cassilly hailed the setup as "the most advanced in the state," a setup that includes a total of 104 cameras mounted on 26 poles, each pole with four cameras in enclosure, he further detailed in an interview, as detailed by WMAR-2 News. These cameras are equipped with artificial intelligence to identify unusual activities, through an efficient system capable of relaying the data to police and emergency responders in response to specific triggers such as rapid movement, someone being approached unexpectedly, or someone falling or disappearing.

In response to concerns over privacy, Cassilly pointed out during a briefing that the sophisticated camera network isn't subject to 24/7 live monitoring by personnel, he clarified, "We're not providing open access to these cameras," further emphasizing the role of AI in the process rather than human observation, according to CBS News Baltimore.
