The National Weather Service (NWS) in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued a Heat Advisory alerting residents of Charlotte and surrounding regions that from 11 AM this morning to 7 PM EDT this evening, temperatures will soar, pairing with high humidity to drive heat index values up to a life-draining 105 degrees.
Areas under this advisory include parts of Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, such as Elbert County in Georgia, Mecklenburg, and Union NC Counties in North Carolina, and several counties in South Carolina. The NWS warns of high-impact temperatures that can ignite heat-related illnesses, drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors, the advisory suggests.
Aside from the oppressive heat, the NWS indicates that scattered thunderstorms this afternoon and into the evening could bring an onslaught of cloud-to-ground lightning and flash flooding due to torrential rainfall. The outlook is similarly grim for the coming days, with a continued threat of thunderstorms.
Furthermore, such severe weather could pose significant risks well into the weekend, with the likelihood of isolated thunderstorms that could herald additional flooding and, again, damaging wind gusts. According to the Hazardous Weather Outlook, more thunderstorms are expected over the weekend and could produce isolated flooding and damaging wind gusts. The NWS encourages the local community to remain vigilant and report severe weather observations to improve situational awareness and responsiveness.
