In a turn of events that highlights the often-overlooked heroism of family pets, a dog in Ayer is being hailed for its pivotal role in waking its owner during a blaze that consumed part of their home. As reported by Boston 25 News, fire crews were called to the scene at Mulberry Circle at around 1:30 a.m. to tackle flames that originated in the kitchen. Boston 25 News detailed that the homeowner had already evacuated, but the family's dog remained inside, subjected to the dangers of smoke inhalation on the second floor.
The quick response of firefighters allowed them to suppress the fire rapidly and turn their attention to the canine in distress. They found the dog on the second floor, promptly administered oxygen, and facilitated its transport to an emergency veterinary facility in Westford. As WHDH reports, the pet is now in a stable condition. "The homeowner had been awoken by the dog and found the upper floor filled with smoke," the Ayer Fire Department posted on Facebook, as a testament to the pet's life-saving actions, especially critical since the home lacked working smoke alarms.
The cause of the fire is still under active investigation, but the Ayer Fire Department's message is unequivocal: “Every home needs to have working smoke alarms on every habitable level and within 10 feet of every bedroom. This homeowner was extremely lucky to survive the fire unscathed,” the department emphasized, according to WHDH. The harrowing experience endured by this local family has imparted a critical lesson on the significance of fire preparedness, and the often unsung valor that lies within our four-legged friends.
