A 55-year-old paralegal from Hickory, N.C., identified as Jennifer Elaine Roarke, has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for embezzling more than $2 million from law firm clients, according to a release by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of North Carolina. Roarke, who also goes by Jennifer Claveria, will face two years of supervised release following her prison term. This announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Dena J. King, alongside Robert M. DeWitt, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in North Carolina.

In a scheme that lasted from 2015 to September 2021, Roarke misappropriated at least 190 fraudulent bank wires from client trust accounts to her own, summing up to an egregious total of over $2 million. These accounts were under the oversight of the law firm she worked at, which specialized in trust administration and management. Despite being delegated to handle routine tasks such as opening mail and depositing checks, Roarke used her position to fund an extravagant lifestyle at the expense of the clients she was entrusted to serve.

Per the court documents, personal expenses covered by the stolen funds included mortgage, car, and credit card payments. On December 1, 2023, Roarke admitted her guilt by pleading guilty to wire fraud. During this time, she is released on bond and is awaiting designation to a federal prison facility where she will begin her sentence.
