As Houston reels from the tragic loss of Marshall Middle School student Landon Payton, questions circulate about the adequacy of the response to the 14-year-old's emergency. According to a Houston Chronicle report, HISD has stated the nurse who attended to Landon during the incident had decades of experience and was actively registered. However, Landon's father, Alexis Payton, expressed concerns regarding the nurse's ability to properly administer CPR and to potentially use an automated external defibrillator, as captured in the video footage of the event.
In a candid reflection, the Houston ISD released information about the response immediately following Landon's collapse. Teachers present immediately radioed for the nurse and called 911 as they witnessed the medical emergency during a P.E. class characterized by "free play." Landon, who had recently transferred to the school, was not observed to have been feeling ill prior, thus the suddenness of the emergency caught staff and students unaware. FOX 26 Houston cited the district's belief that both staff and emergency services acted swiftly and effectively in their attempts to save Landon's life.
While the Harris County medical examiner has yet to list a cause of death, HISD's release underscores the experience of the nurse on scene, highlighting her previous role as a cardiac and pulmonary surgery nurse. Despite this, Payton, in his interview with district staff, claimed to have seen evidence that the nurse was unclear on emergency procedures.
"All I want is the closure," Payton told the Houston Chronicle. "Tears and hugging are all we can do." The community has rallied behind the Payton family, with a GoFundMe campaign initiated to aid with funeral costs. Michael Bill, CEO of Bill Clair Family Mortuary, emphasized the community's support in a message, stating, "The grieving father is seeking answers and at the same time is preparing for his funeral. Your support and help would be greatly appreciated."
An ongoing investigation, coupled with the district's assurance of transparency, aims to eventually provide the family with the closure they deeply need. HISD Superintendent Mike Miles, offering a personal touch, has communicated his empathy, asserting the district's commitment to supporting Landon’s family through this crisis, as per statements given to the media.
