Houston residents should keep umbrellas ready this week due to showers and thunderstorms. Today, there is a 50% chance of rain, with mostly cloudy skies and a high near 87°F. Northeastern winds at 5 to 10 mph will make it slightly less humid. Unless thunderstorms bring more, less than a tenth of an inch of rain is expected.
As the evening sets in, the likelihood of showers and thunderstorms will marginally decrease to 40 percent, leaving the night "mostly cloudy." Temperatures will drop to a low of around 77 degrees, with an easterly breeze gently moving at 5 mph. The National Weather Service's detailed weather forecast for Houston suggests that the start of the workweek will follow suit, with a "chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 1 pm"—a pattern projected to persist through to Wednesday.
The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center has warned about possible severe weather in regions beyond Houston. "There is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms across parts of the central Appalachians and upper Ohio Valley." The system responsible for the unsettled weather continues to "make slow eastward progress" according to the Storm Prediction Center's Forecast Discussion.
Houston isn’t expecting severe weather, but the forecast isn’t clear either. A Heat Index Outlook shared via social media indicates that rain chances will stay in play with "highs in the upper 80s to near 90." It's said that thunderstorm activity will be "highest near the coast," and even warns that some downpours could be on the heavier side, especially closer to the coast. Showers and storms may complicate Labor Day outdoor activities. These updates are current and accessible for residents who need to navigate the weather over the weekend and plan for the week ahead, according to an official post on X by the National Weather Service.
Rain chances remain in the forecast today, with highs in the upper 80s to near 90. Thunderstorm activity will yet again be highest near the coast, and a few heavier downpours can't be ruled out. Showers and storms will continue to linger into the evening.#houwx #txwx pic.twitter.com/kxGlFX9ZAj
