Houston residents are bracing for a combination of hazy skies and high temperatures as the city weathers a plume of Saharan dust intermingling with the humid Gulf Coast climate. According to the National Weather Service, Houstonians will experience widespread haze with mostly sunny skies and a high near 94 degrees today, with heat index values soaring as high as 107.

While the haze is expected to be widespread, the forecast anticipates calmer conditions in the evening with a low of around 78 degrees. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has issued a report, as mentioned by Houston Chronicle, informing that levels of particulate matter could occasionally spike into the moderate range, signaling that people with sensitivities may experience minor allergy-like symptoms.

The weather outlook for the weekend hints at a slight respite from the heat. There's a weak cold front that may stir up skies again, according to a forecast discussion by the NWS Storm Prediction Center. However, by Friday, as the dust continues to disperse, Houston is expected to see a slight improvement in air quality along with bluer skies.

Temperatures will remain elevated with the possibility of hitting the mid to upper 90s at the end of the week. "Whether it’s 94 or 97 degrees where you are, humidity on Friday could increase the risk of experiencing heat-related illnesses. Humidity-driven heat index values will top out at or above 105 degrees. A heat index reading of at least 108 could prompt the National Weather Service to issue a heat advisory," the Houston Chronicle reported. Despite the anticipated return of hazier conditions on Saturday, the air quality should not deteriorate significantly, suggesting only those most sensitive to the dust may feel its effects.

As the weekend advances, Sunday promises clearer skies again and a chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms, particularly south of Interstate 10. These sporadic weather patterns are expected to maintain temperatures near the average for this time of year. Houstonians should stay informed through local forecasts and be prepared for sudden changes in weather, while also taking necessary precautions to deal with the associated health risks of this hazy, hot period.
