The city of Houston braces for another scorching day as temperatures are set to soar near the 100-degree mark, with the National Weather Service issuing a heat advisory for the entirety of Southeast Texas. In a detailed forecast provided on their website, the NWS reports a "20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 4pm," with temperatures peaking at about 100 degrees and a heat index—a measure of how hot it really feels when relative humidity is factored in with the actual air temperature—that could reach as high as 109.
Residents can expect a reprieve from the heat later in the evening, as the chances for showers and thunderstorms linger before 1 am. The NWS forecast also notes that temperatures tonight will dip to a low around 81 degrees. Despite mild winds from the east, Houstonians are advised to stay hydrated and avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours. Additionally, the weekend outlook remains largely unchanged, with ongoing sunny and hot conditions, and the mercury hovering just below the century mark.
The NWS Storm Prediction Center in Oklahoma has further elaborated on weather patterns affecting the region. According to a forecast discussion, a moist airmass present over East-central Texas will contribute to moderate instability as surface temperatures increase throughout the day. This could potentially lead to a series of storms developing south of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, and some of those might bring "marginally severe wind gusts" as they push into the middle Texas Coastal Plain by the evening.
Furthermore, the NWS Houston branch highlighted on X, that this combination of heat and potential storm activity mainly west of the I-45 corridor, could indeed present late afternoon and evening disruptions. Residents are advised to keep abreast of the latest weather updates as the "heat stays in the forecast for the next 7 days," hinting at sustained periods of heat risk for vulnerable populations and an ongoing requirement for caution among all sections of the community.
