Michael Coates, the 21-year-old Houston man involved in a high-profile crime spree that included the murder of Marcus Mercado and the carjacking of an elderly couple, has been sentenced to 80 years in prison. The sentencing was announced by Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg yesterday. Coates' series of crimes began with the fatal shooting of 29-year-old Mercado on Feb. 11, 2023, following an argument near a convenience store located at the 9800 block of Meadowglen Lane, according to the Harris County District Attorney's office.
Coates was caught on surveillance footage shooting Mercado multiple times, the scene tragically culminating with three point-blank shots to the head as the victim lay on the ground. After the murder, Coates continued his crime spree, carjacking a 75-year-old woman and her 77-year-old husband two hours later in West Houston. The carjacking was also captured on video, which later aided police in Coates' apprehension. The victim's car was discovered abandoned two days following the carjacking.
Only three days after the murder, Coates was involved in another incident, an armed robbery where he took a man's wallet, car keys, and laptop. Investigators managed to track the stolen laptop to Coates' apartment, where they found the murder weapon, a Glock 9mm semiautomatic pistol. Coates was finally arrested on March 22, 2023, well after local authorities released the carjacking video to the public for assistance in locating him.
During his trial, the jury was presented with evidence not only of the murder but also of the subsequent robberies. "The defendant did this in broad daylight, then ran from the police and later claimed self-defense, which the jury was smart enough to recognize was not true — it was an attempt at an excuse for murder," Assistant District Attorney Nancy Ta, a chief in the DA’s trial bureau, stated. She further noted, “And when the jury heard about the other armed robberies, the other victims and all of the families of the victims who were affected, they made the right decision.” District Attorney Kim Ogg echoed these sentiments, as per Harris County District Attorney's office.
Under the given sentence, Coates will be required to serve a minimum of 30 years before being eligible for parole.
