
Early on the morning of August 23, an incident involving a military vehicle and a Ford Expedition resulted in the closure of southbound lanes on I-25 near Pueblo. The Colorado State Patrol responded to the crash just after 4 a.m. at milepost 107. As reported by KDVR, a military convoy, including a Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) pulling a trailer with warning lights and a “Convoy Ahead” banner, was struck from the rear by the Expedition.
According to 9News, the impact caused the military vehicle and its trailer to roll over, coming to rest in the highway’s center median. Debris from the crash initially led to the closure of just the left lane, but soon after the entire southbound lanes were shut down for investigation and cleanup. Traffic was rerouted at Exit 108, returning to I-25 at Exit 104.
The soldiers in the JLTV managed to free themselves from the overturned vehicle and proceeded to assist the occupants of the Expedition. According to 9News, All four soldiers were taken to a local hospital purely as a precaution. The three Expedition occupants, however, sustained serious injuries and were also hospitalized.
The investigation into the crash has revealed the Expedition was allegedly traveling over the 75 MPH speed limit when it collided with the military convoy. The driver, a 29-year-old man from Denver, is currently being investigated for impairment, and pending the investigation's conclusion, charges may be filed, as detailed by KOAA.
