After a significant closure due to aggressive brush fires, I-84 in Gilliam County is back in action. According to the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), both directions of the interstate had been shut down between milepost 129 and 140, and then expanded to between milepost 137 and 159 as the wildfires spread.
The closure, which began on a Friday night approximately 3 miles east of Arlington, was triggered by a wildfire that ignited in the median. KOIN reports that by 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, the roadway was reopened, however, officials have warned drivers to remain cautious due to the potential low visibility from lingering smoke.
Adding to the urgency of the situation, the Gilliam County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that two other fires merged with the one alongside I-84, creating a larger, more dangerous threat. As the fire crossed southward near milepost 142, it began advancing towards residences along Highway 74, which prompted immediate evacuation orders. According to a KPTV interview, people were allowed to return home a few hours after the initial evacuation.
Throughout this ordeal, firefighters battled the blazes, which, at one point stretched across a 22-mile expanse of the interstate. In their update, KTVZ noted that the fire remained active along the north side of the interstate from milepost 142 to milepost 145, and described a concerning scene near Exit 147, where a stack of railroad ties had also ignited.
The concerted efforts of multiple agencies, including the Oregon State Police, and ODOT were pivotal in the response, and the subsequent lifting of the evacuation orders yesterday signaled a return to normalcy for the affected residents. Although the interstate is currently open, the aftermath of the wildfires serves as a stark reminder of how quickly nature can disrupt our lives and infrastructure.
