A tragic turn of events unfolded on Kelly Drive Thursday afternoon when an Uber driver's illegal maneuver led to a fatal three-vehicle crash, according to Philadelphia police. The incident occurred at the intersection of Kelly and Reservoir drives near the Strawberry Mansion Bridge and was reported just before 3:30 p.m., police said. CBS News Philadelphia reports that a black Nissan Altima, driven by the Uber driver, was making an "illegal left turn" onto Reservoir Drive which instigated the collision.
The turn, made as traffic flowed northbound, was the catalyst for the devastating chain reaction. The Nissan Altima was struck by a white Nissan Rogue, and subsequently, the impact caused a black BMW coming onto Kelly Drive to be hit. The series of unfortunate events ultimately claimed the life of a 41-year-old passenger inside the Nissan Altima, who was taken to Temple University Hospital and pronounced dead at 4:02 p.m., according to FOX 29.
Furthermore, the Altima's 45-year-old driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, as police have said. No further injuries were reported from the incident which had consequentially closed Kelly Drive for several hours between Hunting Park Avenue and Fountain Green Drive, as per 6abc.
