Hamilton County Prosecutor Melissa Powers confirmed a series of indictments in connection with a violent intrusion last year at Delhi's VIP Smoke Shop, resulting in multiple charges for three individuals. As reported by the HCPros website, the October incident led to two counts of murder, several burglary charges, and a count of possession of criminal tools for one Amontae Carter. The alleged crime could land him a life sentence with the possibility of parole after 15 years if he is found guilty on all counts.
The early morning burglary on October 20, 2023, escalated when Tony Thacker, manager and resident of the smoke shop, used a firearm to confront the intruders. One of the suspects, Travis Johnson, was fatally shot by Thacker. The prosecutor's office highlighted the store manager's response, noting there is "simply no justification for shooting at someone as they are running away" according to the HCPros website, while emphasizing zero tolerance for retail thefts. Thacker, facing his own set of charges including felonious assault, is prohibited from weapon possession due to a past felony as a juvenile.
Alongside Carter's and Thacker's indictments, Malachi Thacker has been indicted for tampering with evidence in what unfolds as an attempt to conceal the aftermath of the crime scene.
