Detroit's own rock savant Jack White is gearing up for a whirlwind weekend with his "back-to-basics" tour, announcing a surprise concert at the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor this Sunday before reuniting with the Hentchmen for an anticipated Labor Day gig. The Detroit News reports that the spontaneous announcement pairs with show dates in Pittsburgh and Columbus.
Momentum has been White's ally as, after dropping his raw album "No Name" for free in July and then officially on August 2, he's kept the hype alive with gigs dotted across his home state, including a star-studded performance during the Michigan Central Station's reopening fest, and now with doors opening at 7 p.m. for the Ann Arbor show which is set to feature the artistic kinetics fans have come to expect from the rocker. The show is a boutique one with only 400 tickets going on sale to Third Man Vault members at noon on Wednesday, then to all at 1 p.m., as per WXYZ.
Metro Times sheds light on the Blind Pig's storied past, noting its symbolic stature for having hosted Nirvana before their colossal rise, a fitting backdrop for White's latest authenticity-driven endeavors which, aside from the tour, include a rare Monday performance with the Hentchmen. Vault memberships, a boon for early ticket access, are available at $75 quarterly, speaking volumes about the loyalty built by White's Third Man Records label.
The Labor Day performance at 8 p.m. on Monday adds to the excitement of White’s homecoming. His reunion with the Hentchmen is especially anticipated, promising a nostalgic night as he returns to Detroit’s gritty garage rock scene. The tour band includes well-known musicians like Dominic Davis, Patrick Keeler, and Bobby Emmett, who are recognized across the state for their work with other major acts.
