Kingsport's Parks and Recreation Department is stepping up to provide a unique experience for families with its inaugural Sensory Splash Day event. Set against the backdrop of the Riverview Splash Pad at 1101 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, this event focuses on inclusivity, aiming to deliver an aquatic adventure everyone can enjoy. It's slated for August 16, running from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and the best part is there's no fee to join in the fun, nor is there a need to register beforehand.
The community is encouraged to come together, with kids of all ages in mind, to make a splash in a setting that's more than your average puddle-jumping affair. The zero-depth splash pad boasts a variety of water features, from gentle surface jets to more imaginative elements like a snake head water spray and a palm tree with its cascade of water jets. It's more than just play; it's an engagement of the senses, an array of experiences curated to cater to the delight and discovery of those with disabilities, or physical limitations. According to the City of Kingsport, Tennessee, this splash day event is an arm of the department's A.S.P.I.R.E. program which stands for Adaptive: Sports Programs Inclusive Recreation Experiences, an initiative dedicated to equitable play for all participants.
For families considering the Sensory Splash Day, know that it represents something bigger than merely escaping the heat. This event is a reflection of Kingsport’s commitment to inclusivity in recreation, creating spaces where limitations are acknowledged but don’t define the scope of joy and community. The Riverview Splash Pad is designed to be a welcoming place for children and families, regardless of ability, to come together and enjoy water entertainment in a way that's considerate to sensory needs and accessible for all.
