The City of Kirkland recently announced the much-anticipated reopening of the Kirkland Teen Union Building (KTUB), set to welcome back local teens on September 3. Acting as a hub for young people to engage in a diverse array of free activities and services, KTUB aims to foster an inclusive environment for both middle and high schoolers. According to an announcement from the city's officials, the after school establishment provides a space for art creation, playing games, collaborative study, and accessing vital mental health services.
In an effort to support youth development, KTUB's doors will be open Monday through Friday, with additional programs held on most Saturdays. Deputy Mayor Jay Arnold expressed the city's commitment to youth, stating, "The City of Kirkland is dedicated to providing our youth with the resources they need to thrive." He emphasized the importance of KTUB in the community, noting that it serves as "a critical hub for Kirkland’s teens," as reported by the city's news release.
Central to KTUB's offering is the partnership with Youth Eastside Services (YES) which brings on-site behavioral health services to the center. This collaboration ensures that those seeking mental health counseling or substance use treatment can find professional help without the hurdle of costs. Additionally, programs specifically tailored for Latinx youth will be provided by 4 Tomorrow, a non-profit working with KTUB to deliver culturally relevant support.
The center provide also a slew of recreation classes and workshops that run the gamut from video gaming to painting to life skills development. According to Parks and Community Services Director Lynn Zwaagstra shared with the city's news release, "KTUB has long been a place where teens can explore their creativity, find support, and build lasting friendships." Zwaagstra looks forward to the enhanced services KTUB will offer through its partnerships. While some classes might carry a nominal fee, the City promises to maintain affordable rates and provide scholarships, reinforcing its pledge to accessible programming for all youths.
The City is planning a grand reopening celebration on September 18, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The community-wide event will feature live music, refreshments, and an exhibition of the services and programs available at KTUB. Kirkland residents and families are invited to partake in this special occasion, which serves as both a reintroduction and a commitment to the ongoing support of the area's youth.
