Renton Police officers responded to a lewd conduct call on the 200 block of Williams Avenue South at around 4:29 p.m. Wednesday, after a victim reported a man standing outside a front door, exposing and pleasuring himself. Officers contacted the victim, but by the time they searched the area, the man was gone. Now police are asking the public for help identifying him.
According to the Renton Police Department, the suspect fled the area as soon as he realized he had been spotted, and officers were unable to locate him despite responding quickly to the scene. The department's Facebook post, titled simply “Can you ID this man?”, asks anyone with information to contact Sergeant Thielman by phone at (425) 430-7683 or by email at [email protected]. The case has been logged under police case number 26-6804.
A Newly Upgraded Block With a Troubled Past
The stretch of Williams Avenue South where the incident occurred sits in a corridor the city has spent heavily to revitalize. Renton completed major streetscape upgrades there in July 2024, adding a dozen new pedestrian-scale streetlights, new sidewalks, driveway aprons, and seasonal banners as part of its Downtown Civic Core Vision initiative, according to the City of Renton. The same block previously drew heightened community attention after a 34-year-old man was fatally shot outside a local establishment there in July 2022, an incident that led to the arrest of two suspects the following month, as reported by Patch.
This is not the first lewd conduct call Renton officers have handled recently. In late June, police blotter records show officers responded to a similar report on the 1600 block of Grant Avenue South, where a man exposed himself to a passing female driver and was arrested at the scene, per the Renton Reporter. It remains unknown whether the man involved in Wednesday's incident is connected to that earlier case or any other recent calls.
What Charges Could the Suspect Face?
Under Washington state law, a person is guilty of indecent exposure if they intentionally make an open and obscene exposure of themselves knowing the conduct is likely to cause reasonable affront or alarm, per RCW 9A.88.010 as cited by the Washington State Legislature. A first-time adult offense is typically charged as a misdemeanor, carrying a maximum penalty of 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine. The same statute escalates to a gross misdemeanor if committed in front of a child under 14, and to a Class C felony punishable by up to five years in prison if the suspect has prior sex offense convictions, according to Newton & Hall Attorneys at Law. Because identifying the suspect is central to determining what charges, if any, could apply, investigators are relying on tips from the public to move the case forward.
Downtown Remains a Focus for Police Resources
Renton's overall crime picture has been trending downward. Police Chief Jon Schuldt reported in March that total citywide calls for service dropped from 67,406 in 2024 to 65,523 in 2025, alongside notable reductions in property crime, the Renton Reporter noted. Despite that broader decline, downtown Renton remains a designated focus zone for police monitoring; a July presentation to the Renton City Council identified the area as one of the city's primary geographic priorities for public safety resources, according to the City of Renton.
The city's 2025–2026 biennial budget backed that focus with funding, setting aside roughly $3.5 million for public safety priorities, including eight new police officer positions and an evidence technician for the department, per city budget records. For now, whether downtown surveillance cameras captured any footage of the fleeing suspect, and whether other business owners along Williams Avenue South have reported similar encounters, remain open questions in the investigation.
