In a stark conclusion to a harrowing case that has stirred Lancaster County, Robert Boddy, a 45-year-old man, received a life sentence plus an additional 32.5 years on Monday for the murder of 65-year-old Nora Sanchez. The Lancaster County District Attorney's office announced that Boddy pleaded guilty to charges including first-degree homicide, strangulation, and aggravated indecent assault, a second-time offense for him, as per a report by ABC27.
Boddy, who previously served a full 10-year sentence for a 2006 sexual assault, had failed to register as a Megan’s Law offender, adding to the gravity of his acts. According to PennLive, Sanchez had expressed fear of Boddy to a neighbor just days before her death, citing his unwanted sexual remarks and advances. This marked a chilling prelude to the discovery of Sanchez's body surrounded by groceries, suggesting she was ambushed soon after returning home on August 31, 2021.
Boddy’s criminal history, meticulously documented, includes a 2006 incident where a Leacock Township woman, living with Boddy, reported he sexually assaulted her at knifepoint. Reflecting on this dark prior, the neighbor recounted how despite intrusive and alarming behavior, including break-ins, she never contacted the police due to Boddy's occasional assistance with maintenance and errands, PennLive detailed.
The turning point in the investigation came when DNA evidence processed by the Pennsylvania State Police Crime Lab was found under the victim’s fingernails, matching Boddy’s DNA. "It is 2.6 nonillion times more likely this DNA came from Boddy than from an unknown, unrelated person," prosecutors highlighted, as mentioned in the same PennLive article. After his wife’s admission that there were hours she could not account for Boddy’s whereabouts, and following a suicide attempt by Boddy the day after the murder, the case against him was strong. WGAL's coverage of the court proceedings reflected this, noting the admission of guilt to this tragic and fatal assault on a vulnerable neighbor.
Sanchez was discovered in her New Holland apartment on the 300 block of East Main Street, where both she and Boddy resided after the property manager conducted a welfare check at her adult daughter's request.
