A 21-year-old woman was found unresponsive and seriously injured on Tuesday night in her apartment at the WREN complex in downtown Los Angeles, an incident currently being probed by the LAPD as an attempted murder. According to KTLA, the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a welfare check around 10:30 p.m. near Hill Street and Pico Boulevard. The victim was subsequently transported to a hospital after paramedics discovered her in dire medical condition.

CBS Los Angeles reports that the call to authorities came from a concerned family member who had lost contact with the woman, motivating the welfare check that led to the grisly find. As of Wednesday night, her condition was critical, and the nature of her injuries has not been disclosed. The investigation took a turn when hospital staff informed police that her injuries pointed to an assault at around 1 a.m. the next day.

Officers have not released any information concerning potential suspects, nor have they provided insights into what might have transpired inside the apartment. With crime-scene tape sectioning off surroundings, detectives have been meticulously searching through the first-floor unit, paying particular attention to a glass barrier and the woman's balcony, where they were seen dusting for fingerprints, as ABC7 Eyewitness News captured the investigation's immediacy on Wednesday.

While residents have been alerted to the criminal investigation, some have expressed concerns about their safety. One tenant emphasized the choice of residence based on the presence of round-the-clock security and voiced apprehensions about living on the ground floor with potentially easier access points. "The reason I chose this apartment is because they have 24/7 security," Yi, a resident of the complex, told KTLA, "That's why I don’t consider living on the first floor cause the patio area is maybe not quite safe, you have another door to enter the apartment." Meanwhile, the LAPD has reminded the community to ensure that all doors and windows are kept locked.

As the victim remains hospitalized, the LAPD has encouraged anyone with information to come forward. Should individuals possess pertinent details, they are asked to contact LAPD detectives at (213) 996-4150.
