Following a recent surge in violent crime, LAPD officers from the Newton Division were out on June 30 to patrol the area around 70th Street and Main Street. According to an LAPD news release, the officers found a group of individuals standing in the street, flouting public drinking and smoking laws, prompting them to intervene. The situation escalated when officers spotted a 17-year-old male attempting to conceal what they suspected might be a weapon or contraband. This confrontation eventually led to the male subject and two police officers needing medical attention.
Detailed by LAPD, the officers were merely trying to ensure the vehicles were promptly moved along and to cease public consumption of alcohol and marijuana. It was during this encounter that they observed the young man, later determined to quickly hide an unknown object under his seat in a double-parked vehicle, prompting him to suspect illicit activity. As they instructed him to exit the car, the suspect fled, thereby initiating a foot chase that would eventually become a Non-Categorical Use of Force event.
The repercussions of the chase were immediate, with two officers sustaining injuries serious enough to require hospital treatment, though they were subsequently released. As per LAPD's unfolding account, the 17-year-old was subdued with a TASER deployment during the skirmish. After receiving medical care, he was cleared for booking on charges that included Battery on a Police Officer with Serious Bodily Injury and transported to Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall.
No further injuries were reported to the community or other officers in the incident. The LAPD's Force Investigation Division has since been directed to delve into this occurrence, may to uncover additional facets of the case as they analyze forensic evidence and interview witnesses.
