A $5 million settlement has been reached with Larimer County in the wrongful death lawsuit filed for Brent Thompson, who died after a sheriff's deputy deployed a Taser against him on Interstate 25, leading to him being struck by a vehicle. According to 9News, the settlement has been outlined by the family's attorneys and confirmed on August 30th.
Body camera footage from the February 18, 2023, incident released last year shows the confrontation leading to Thompson's fall onto the roadway. While a financial settlement has been reached, the victim's family feels that true justice remains elusive. "Justice was not served. No one was disciplined, fired, or held accountable," Brent Thompson's grandmother, Karen Thompson said, as per Denver Gazette. Karen Thompson also noted to the residents of Larimer County, "This is coming out of your taxes."
The tragic chain of events unfolded as Deputy Lujan, who was working overtime, aimed to detain Thompson for his and the safety of other drivers. According to KDVR, an investigative letter highlighted that Lujan checked for traffic before deploying the Taser, but did not do so immediately before the actual use, a critical span of about 15 seconds. The failure to reassess the situation was labeled as "a clear lapse in judgment."
The driver of the Ford Explorer involved in the accident, who incidentally was traveling with his wife and three children, explained that he saw an object and two individuals along the highway and tried to avoid them, with tragic consequences. His account, as well as details regarding Deputy Lujan's actions, are part of a complex narrative that has culminated in the $5 million settlement, a figure meant to serve as a remedy, yet, as the Thompson family expresses, is starkly insufficient in accounting for life and for the sense of justice required in its wake.
