In a sudden move that has left fans both stunned and without a plan for the weekend, Lauryn Hill and The Fugees have canceled their widely anticipated U.S. tour, including the opening show in Tampa, mere days before it was set to commence. ABC Action News reported the tour's first show, intended to play at Tampa's MIDFLORIDA Credit Union Amphitheatre, will no longer go on as scheduled—or at all.
Fans caught off guard by the abrupt cancelation have been scrambling for answers, but they are left high and dry without much in the way of official explanations from either the artists or the event organizers, while ticket holders, who started receiving refund notices on Tuesday afternoon, find themselves in a limbo. Lauryn Hill's social media accounts, which usually lie dormant, have yet to shed light on the situation, despite the tour vanishing from the venue's calendar. This news, according to a Creative Loafing Tampa article.
The cancelation, unfortunately, treads a familiar path; it's not the first time Lauryn Hill has made headlines for tour disruptions. Last year's series of scrapped performances were chalked up to vocal strain complications, as noted by Variety, and now with another unraveling, Tampa fans feel the sting of 2018's canceled St. Pete show all over again. Each U.S. date has been pulled from Ticketmaster, yet there seems to be a glimmer of hope for international audiences, as those tour segments are still currently on sale.
Serving as an echo chamber to the dismay and confusion of ticket buyers, WFLA News reported that Live Nation's cancellation notice provided no comfort aside from refund assurances, stating: "Unfortunately, the Event Organizer has had to cancel your event," and left it at that. For those fans who might've passed on the torch of musical hope by transferring tickets to others, refunds will reportedly circle back to the original purchaser's account, not quite healing the wound, of such a letdown, but it's a necessary fiscal salve nonetheless.
While YG Marley had been set to open for The Fugees on this U.S. circuit, their role, much like the tour itself, now hangs in the balance. At present, Lauryn Hill’s website continues to blissfully list all the U.S. tour dates, suspended in a digital limbo that contrasts the reality of frustrated fans nationwide.
