Leesburg Installs Speed Cameras to Enhance Safety in School ZonesSource: City of Leesburg

In an effort to address the problem of speeding in school zones, the City of Leesburg has set its sights on technology—with the installation of speed enforcement cameras. This new measure, which was set into motion on August 12, aligns with the beginning of the new school year and operates under the premise of safety, as reported by ClickOrlando.

Speeding through school zones in Leesburg is not a trivial issue. A recent speed test, as reported by ClickOrlando, revealed a staggering 2,844 vehicles exceeded the speed limit at Oak Park Middle School in a single day. Leesburg Elementary witnessed a similarly alarming figure, with 1,741 violations. With numbers this high, the city's leaders have decided inaction was no longer an option.

The Leesburg Police Department has taken steps to educate the public about the forthcoming change. For the next month, drivers caught speeding will receive a warning, but after this period, any vehicle exceeding the speed limit by over 10 mph will be issued a citation. According to ClickOrlando, city's Chief Joseph Iozzi on the matter: "By adding consequences for speeding drivers, we will encourage them to follow traffic laws and slow down when driving around our schools. It’s not worth compromising a child safety regardless of the reason."

WFTV reports that Leesburg is following in the footsteps of Eustis, the first city in Florida to implement such technology. Leesburg is setting an example, reshaping the narrative that surrounds the safety of school zones, one slowed vehicle at a time.
