The San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department released a statement confirming the arrest of a man suspected of starting a fire in Loma Linda last month. On July 25th, a brush fire was reported near Sierra Vista Drive and Sage Drive, which quickly spread over 17 acres, threatening nearby residences. Fortunately, the blaze was contained before causing damage to any homes.
After an investigation into the incident, authorities concluded that the fire was intentional and arrested 46-year-old Matthew Grell, identified as a resident of Loma Linda. In serving the search warrant at Grell's home on August 8th, evidence related to the arson was found, leading to his arrest. The arrest was made without incident, with Grell now facing charges for the destructive act that put lives and property at risk.
Information regarding the case was disseminated through a notification on Nixle, encouraging any individuals with knowledge about the fire to step forward. Officials are especially interested in tips that could strengthen their case against Grell. Detective Julio Vasconcelos and Cal Fire Investigator Bennet Milloy are the primary contacts for any such information, though there is also the option to leave information anonymously via the We-Tip Hotline.
As the legal process unfolds, the community is asked to heal from the arson-induced fear, knowing that the suspect is now apprehended. Law enforcement and fire prevention officials warn that arson is a serious offense with severe consequences, as evidenced in the Loma Linda incident. The sheriff's department has thanked the public for their assistance and continues to seek information that might aid in the case against Grell.
