A homeowner in the Winnetka neighborhood of Los Angeles defended his family from a suspect during a home invasion early Friday morning, resulting in the intruder being stabbed and later hospitalized. According to KTLA, the altercation occurred at approximately 4:12 a.m. on Elkwood Street, as the suspect entered the house while the family was inside.
The suspect, a man in his mid-20s, was confronted by the homeowner's adult daughter before her father got involved in what became a physical confrontation, during the encounter, the homeowner, to protect his kin, stabbed the suspected invader who managed to escape the scene but was subsequently arrested by Los Angeles Police Department officers, treated at a local hospital, and listed in stable condition. KTLA disclosed that the suspect had allegedly broken into her home before proceeding to the next target, adding to the tension of the night's events.
More insight into the household's defense was reported by NBC Los Angeles, where Joseph Santos, son to the homeowners, recounted how his father, upon discovering the intruder, armed himself with a knife, while Santos' sisters aided by hitting the intruder with a vacuum cleaner, the family's quick and improvised response left all four family members unscathed.
As details continued to surface, the intruder had triggered multiple security systems in the area, earlier footage captured by a doorbell camera showed the man attempting to force his way into the Santos household with what appeared to be a garden hoe, this was shortly followed by the man's brazen attempt to enter the parents' bedroom, at which point, Santos told ABC7, his family resisted and ultimately defended themselves against the threat. "They struggle for the door," Santos said. "The guy eventually broke the door open," Santos narrated the harrowing ordeal that transpired within the walls of his childhood home.
Meanwhile, community members like Tigran Sargsyan and Vinod Manchhani who have witnessed the neighborhood's tranquility disturbed, expressed a mixture of concern and resolute support for the right to self-defense. "My thought is everybody has a right to defend himself," Sargsyan stated, empathizing with the fears of a lone neighbor who alerted him to the presence of the suspect on his property, as detailed by ABC7.
