Yesterday afternoon, a structure fire was reported at 5014 S Avalon Blvd in South Park, as per the Los Angeles Fire Department. Flames were visible from an outbuilding and a number of pallets containing hand sanitizer. Fire crews, arriving at the scene at around 3:16 pm, managed to quickly extinguish the fire in the shed, according to an LAFD alert.
The LAFD has stated that because hand sanitizer burns clean, there was "no smoke or danger of exposure," thus making it safer to let the materials burn "in a controlled manner." Crews worked to contain any potential runoff with sand and also deployed Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF), which is a suppressant used specifically to put out flammable liquid fires. The alert further clarified that no neighboring structures were threatened by the blaze, and that no injuries had been reported.
The incident, which prompted an "extended duration operation," had no definitive end time projected by the authorities as of the last update. Firefighters remained on site to ensure complete extinguishment and manage any aftereffects of the fire.
Evidently, the coordination of such an operation takes not only swift competence but a readiness to quickly procure and apply necessary materials like AFFF and containment sand. Despite the incident, the LAFD assured the public of no immediate threat to the surrounding area. The proficiency of the fire department to effectively manage the situation reflects their commitment to public safety and their adept handling of unpredictable emergencies.
Details regarding the cause of the fire or any subsequent investigation were not included in the initial alert, and the LAFD has yet to release further information.
