Los Angeles is once again grappling with the aftermath of a hit-and-run incident that has left a pedestrian in severe condition. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the collision occurred on May 15, just as the night settled around 8:30 p.m. A 41-year-old man was crossing at the intersection of 65th Place and Western Avenue when a black sedan, traveling northbound, struck him with such force that he was left with grievous injuries.
The driver, in an act of flagrant disregard, failed to stop and continued north on Western Avenue. A mirror believed to be from a Chevrolet Malibu, years 2016 to 2022, was found at the scene, possibly tying it to the event. The sedan left not just the mirror behind, but a man fighting for his life and a community aghast. Emergency services were called, and the Los Angeles Fire Department quickly transported the victim to a local hospital. The detectives from South Traffic Division are now reaching out, seeking help to find the driver responsible for the incident.
In a city that has witnessed numerous such heartbreaking stories, the Los Angeles City Council had in the past taken the proactive step of establishing the Hit-and-Run Reward Program Trust Fund. This initiative offers up to $25,000 for information that could lead to the arrest and conviction of hit-and-run offenders. The perpetrator, should they be caught, will face the consequences not just of the law, but of the weighty indignation of a city beleaguered by too many similar stories.
Det. Karla Carrillo of the South Traffic Division is the point of contact for any information that can be provided. Witnesses or those with information can reach her at 323-421-2500 during working hours, as found on the LAPD's official statement. For those wishing to remain veiled by anonymity, tips can be submitted to LA Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or through their website. A digital avenue for tips also exists via the “P3 Tips” mobile application, ensuring convenience does not become a roadblock to justice.
