The Oscoda County Sheriff's Office has reported a tragic incident involving the drowning of a 15-year-old boy from Luzerne while swimming in Smith Lake, Comins Township. According to UpNorthLive, multiple 911 calls were placed Tuesday afternoon, prompting deputies to initiate a search. The teenager was found after an extensive hour and a half search and later pronounced dead at the hospital.
ABC12 reported that the drowning victim, identified as Ray Reeder, was swimming at Smith Lake Park beach around 2:45 p.m. when the incident occurred. An extensive joint operation was quickly launched to actively seek and attempt to rescue the teenager, involving sheriff deputies and a conservation officer from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
Ray Reeder was a student at Mio AuSable Schools. In a show of support and to provide assistance, the school district has made grief counselors available, as reported by ABC12. These counselors will be on hand at the school on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday for those struggling with the sudden loss.
The Oscoda County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the drowning. While no foul play is suspected, law enforcement officials and a resident from Macomb County extended help to recover the teen from the water, as stated by 9and10News.
