Nine local companies in Macomb County are ending the summer on a high note after clinching more than $30,000 in grants at the inaugural Best of the Zest Food Pitch Competition. Aimed at nurturing the growth of packaged food and beverage producers, the event was a battleground for entrepreneurs to showcase their brands and win funding to fuel their business development. According to the Macomb County government, winners were determined by their presentation prowess, pitching their products to a panel of judges at Velocity in Sterling Heights on August 22.

With a prize pool that was more than just a financial boost, the recipients now have access to a variety of support services from Macomb County partners. However, to vie for this chance, each company, having no more than 10 employees, had to fit certain criteria, such as being female-owned, minority-owned, veteran-owned, or located in an underserved area. The winners ranged from seasoned sauce makers Belledines BBQ Sauce and Seasonings to the fresh-baked delights of Clementine’s Pastries, indicating a diverse selection of gastronomic entrepreneurs.

"This was a great contest between a variety of phenomenal new businesses that are really working to establish and grow their footprint in Macomb County," Vicky Rowinski, director of the Macomb County Planning and Economic Development (MCPED), said, as per Macomb County. Her excitement about the potential growth of these businesses was echoed in the support promised by the county and its partners to the entrepreneurs.

The list of victorious businesses also features For Heaven’s Cake, Keto Katz Bakery, Maria's House Made Salsa by Pronko Enterprises, LLC, and other notable names such as Radical Plants, LLC, Teta Food, Thai Feast, and Grandma Luckey's Dressing & Marinade. Operating with a lean team and producing everything from raw materials marked the winning criteria for these celebrated local establishments. MCPED's commitment to bolstering small businesses was put into action during this competition, fostering a community that's rife with culinary innovation and entrepreneurial spirit in Macomb County.
