Early Saturday morning, an unusual incident unfolded in front of Allegheny County Jail when officials discovered a man attempting to break into the facility. According to a WTAE, police found Charles Felder passed out after he allegedly spent hours trying to enter the visitors' lobby, with surveillance footage showing his persistent efforts from 4 a.m. until exhaustion took over.
The situation escalated when Felder, upon regaining consciousness, became irate and spat in the face of a medic aiding him. A response that may speak to larger tensions between the public and first responders Felder was then transported to UPMC Mercy for minor injuries he sustained during the attempted breach, as WTAE detailed.
Damage to the jail's entrance was not insignificant. Reports from the scene indicated that Felder had used a garbage can to ram the jail's thick glass and had vigorously pulled at door handles. The Allegheny County Police Department elaborated in a news release that there was "extensive damage to the door," as reported by CBS News Pittsburgh.
As the unusual attempt to infiltrate a facility designed to keep individuals in, rather than out, comes to a close the police are now proceeding with charges. "Allegheny County Police detectives are currently filing charges on the male for burglary-related charges and will be transporting him to the jail for arraignment," the department mentioned, as detailed by the CBS News Pittsburgh report.
