A series of brutal attacks against Hispanic men by a transient man in Santa Monica and Los Angeles has concluded with a conviction and lengthy prison sentence. According to KTLA, the suspect, Kevin Mumin, 37, specifically targeted Hispanic individuals during his crime spree, which authorities have deemed hate crimes.
The Santa Monica Police Department detailed how Mumin was arrested on August 23, 2023, after two incidents just days apart, where one victim was violently struck from behind with a wooden stick and another almost hit with a thrown glass bottle. Mumin's list of crimes includes severe attacks that inflicted great bodily harm on the victims. Following an intensive investigation, authorities tied Mumin to additional hate crimes in the Los Angeles area, as stated in a Santa Monica Government news release.
Throughout his trial earlier this month, Mumin faced charges including three counts of assault with a deadly weapon, with special consideration given for the infliction of great bodily injury, and was convicted of a felony sexual battery charge related to an incident in Los Angeles. Mumin's legal entanglements are extensive, his record marred by a spectrum of violent and disturbing offenses.
The conviction has led to a sentence of 23 years and eight months in state prison, ensuring Mumin's removal from the public sphere for the foreseeable future. The verdict was delivered just over a year after the first reported assault. The efforts of both the Santa Monica Police Department and the Los Angeles Police Department merged in a collaborative justice pursuit, were instrumental in securing this conviction. For those in the community seeking additional information or wishing to contribute to the ongoing investigation into Mumin's history of violence can reach out to Detective Brian Spencer or Sergeant Shaun Cooney at the Santa Monica Police Department.
