West Philadelphia was rocked by a violent incident early Tuesday, resulting in the death of a man driving a Cadillac. According to FOX 29, the chaotic shooting unfolded when at least 17 shots were fired from a Jeep hurtling down the 5400 block of Walnut Street at around 1 a.m. The slain driver believed to be in his 20s or 30s, was found deceased inside the Cadillac at the scene. As the two vehicles raced and exchanged gunfire, the violence left multiple parked cars damaged in its wake.
The deadly encounter spanned several city blocks, with both the Cadillac and Jeep ultimately crashing on the 5500 block of Walnut Street. Per details in a statement obtained by NBC10 Philadelphia, an AR-15 rifle and a 30-round extended magazine were discovered inside the suspect's vehicle, and a pistol was later recovered from the sidewalk nearby. Police Captain Andrew DiSanto mentioned that the involved vehicles came to rest against several parked cars, hinting at the significant impact and speed involved in the crash. The thoroughfare was closed for about five hours as law enforcement scoured for evidence and surveillance footage to aid in identifying the perpetrators.
Homicide detectives are actively engaged in a complex investigation as they seek to unravel the circumstances leading to this tragic event. As of now, they have yet to determine if racing was a definitive factor behind the shooting or what specifically sparked the altercation. According to 6ABC, the incident stretched from 53rd to 55th streets on Walnut and after the shooting and crash, multiple individuals believed to be from the Jeep fled the scene.
