As Labor Day approaches, the Maryland State Police are ramping up their efforts to ensure the holiday weekend is marked by safety rather than tragedy. According to an article from the Maryland Department of State Police, troopers will be out in force from August 30 to September 2, keeping a sharp eye out for impaired, distracted, and aggressive drivers who could put lives at risk.
Funded by the Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration’s Highway Safety Office, the increased presence will feature saturation patrols across the state's major highways. Specifically, the State Police Impaired Driving Reduction Effort team will be actively working to slash alcohol-related injuries and fatalities across the terrains of Maryland, they have stated.
An official press release from the Maryland State Police outlines the regional initiatives in detail. The Eastern Region, which covers barracks in Berlin to Salisbury, plans to focus its DUI enforcement along key routes like 50 and 301. The Central Region's enforcement, including barracks like College Park and Rockville, will patrol on interstates such as 495 and 70.
In the Western Region, troopers based out of Cumberland to McHenry will monitor areas with a higher incident rate, laying their sights on interstates 68 and 70. In contrast, while working with a Harford County Traffic Task Force initiative, troopers from the Bel Air Barrack in the Northern Region are set to enforce the law in areas with a noted prevalence of impaired driving crashes, concentrating along routes such as 22 and 40. Tasked with curbing DUI incidents, the Southern Region barracks from Annapolis to Prince Frederick will be deploying the Maryland State Police Mobile Breath Alcohol Testing truck to assist in these concentrated areas which includes Route 50 and Interstates 695 and 97.
