A Marysville man has been sentenced to 27 years in prison on charges of child exploitation and distribution of child pornography, following an announcement from U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert. Brent Hooton, aged 51, faced U.S. District Judge Dale A. Drozd, who delivered the sentencing after Hooton’s conviction was secured due to the production and distribution of sexually explicit images of minors, including a severely autistic child under 12 years old, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
The disturbing details emerged when Hooton produced three images of the young child in May 2021. These were distributed via Kik Messenger, with at least one going directly to an undercover FBI agent, according to court documents. When law enforcement conducted a search of Hooton's phone with a warrant, they found that he shared these images with no less than six other individuals on the messaging platform. They also unearthed that Hooton had distributed at least four images of other children in similar explicit circumstances, as per the U.S. Attorney's Office.
The case, part of the nationwide Project Safe Childhood initiative, was led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Audrey B. Hemesath and Denise N. Yasinow. Launched in May 2006, Project Safe Childhood is a Department of Justice campaign to address the increasing issues of child sexual exploitation and abuse. For those seeking more information on the ongoing efforts to protect children, the Justice Department has resources available at their Project Safe Childhood website. These efforts aim to combine federal, state, and local resources in the battle against those who aim to exploit children over the internet, and importantly, to assist in the rescue and recovery of victims.
