Drivers in Maui should brace for some inconvenience next week as the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) announced closures along Kaʻahumanu Avenue to facilitate water line work connected to the new Maui Palms Hampton Inn project. According to information from Hawai‘i Department of Transportation's statement, the eastbound lanes between Kāne Street and Lono Avenue are going to be impacted from August 28 to August 30.

For those who travel at night, be aware that a full eastbound closure on Kaʻahumanu Avenue will be in effect from 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 29 to the early morning at 5:30 a.m. on Friday, August 30, creating a detour that takes drivers through Kāne Street to Kamehameha Avenue and onto Lono Avenue to reconnect with Kaʻahumanu Avenue. Meanwhile daytime travel will also be affected as the left turn pocket and left through lane in the eastbound direction on Kaʻahumanu Avenue will be closed from the morning 8:30 a.m. to the mid-afternoon at 3 p.m., on Wednesday, Aug. 28 and Thursday, Aug. 29 due to preparations for trenching work.

Closures are not limited to these times though, with Hawai‘i Department of Transportation noting that more night and day closures are to be expected in the next couple of weeks. As work progresses on this key piece of infrastructure aimed to support Maui's growth, motorists are urged to plan accordingly and allow extra time for their commutes.

Signage and cones will be placed to guide drivers through the detours, and special duty officers along with traffic controllers will be on-site to manage flow and assist motorists during this period. The advice from Hawai‘i Department of Transportation is to drive with extra caution around the workers and heed directions given on the spot. For up-to-date information, residents and travelers can keep an eye on Hawai‘i Department of Transportation's website or social media channels, ensuring they're not caught out by the closures and can navigate the temporary changes with minimal fuss.
