The Bowser Administration is officially launching a month-long homage to Washington D.C.'s creative community with its 202Creates celebration. Mayor Muriel Bowser spearheaded the initiative in 2016, aiming to amplify and celebrate the city's local artists and creative talents through events spanning all eight wards. DC.gov reports that 202Creates is led by the Office of Cable Television, Film, Music, and Entertainment (OCTFME), the Creative Affairs Office, and the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development.
Bringing forth a declaration, "Washington, DC is a vibrant creative epicenter, from performing and visual arts to film and fashion, culinary arts, theater, and more. September is our opportunity to shine a spotlight on the artists who contribute so much to our city," Mayor Bowser stated, emphasizing the importance of the city's creative sector in energizing its resurgence. The celebration commences tonight with an OCTFME-hosted event featuring local talents such as Noochie, Allure Band, and Heru The Violinist, according to DC.gov.
The 202Creates initiative does not just celebrate artistic talents; it also showcases D.C.'s creative economy, valued at $13.8 billion. It is a key opportunity to honor the individuals who contribute to the city's cultural and economic vitality. "DC is the capital of cool, culture, and creativity. 202Creates is a testament to the incredible talent and innovation of our local artists and creatives," OCTFME Director LaToya Foster told DC.gov, lauding the support from Mayor Bowser in fostering a nurturing environment for the arts and creativity.
Residents and visitors can expect a range of events throughout September. From the Art All Night and the DC JazzFest to the H Street Festival and Fashion Week, there's an activity for every art enthusiast. The Dope Black Girls Brunch and the Dress for Success DC's Sustained 2.0 event are part of the festivities. The full list of events can be found on the official 202Creates schedule. In a variety of events including the Fiesta DC Festival, the city's commitment to its creators will continue to be on full display.
